1. COVID-19 Test Definitions
1.1 What is an RT-PCR test?
PCR tests are used to establish diagnosis of COVID-19. This is conducted by a healthcare professional according to ISO-9001 guidelines. The laboratory uses CE/IVD test kits which are accepted by RIVM (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu) for use in performing SARS-Cov-2 testing in the Netherlands. Once the sample has been taken, it is then sent to a laboratory where the Quantitative Real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT) method is used.
1.2 What is a rapid antigen test?
The rapid antigen test is a point-of-care test. This means that the sample taken will not be sent to the laboratory, but is analyzed directly on-site with a special test kit. The result is available within 15-20 minutes. The test smear is done at the test center through the nasal cavity. Please note that compared to the RT-PCR test, false positive results can occur more frequently.
